Neuropsychologist

Carrie Allen is a Neuropsychologist who holds a Master’s degree in Neuropsychology from the University of Cape Town (UCT). She completed her clinical training at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, which afforded her the privilege of supporting patients diagnosed with a wide range of neurological conditions, such as strokes, neurodegenerative diseases, epilepsy and traumatic brain injuries. This experience deepened Carrie’s understanding of the profound ways in which physical health can impact mental health, behaviour and cognition.

She currently works in private practice providing neuropsychological services to in-and out-patients in Cape Town. Her services include comprehensive neuropsychological assessments, psychoeducation and psychotherapy. 

Carrie conducts individually tailored neuropsychological assessments designed to address each patient’s specific needs. The assessment process involves gathering information provided by patients and their loved ones, and collating all available medical history.

Carrie uses neurocognitive tests and clinical observation to identify and characterise patients’ cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and to understand how these affect daily functioning. Assessment findings are used to inform differential diagnoseis, monitor cognition over time, and guide treatment planning.

Carrie is committed to providing clear and compassionate feedback and psychoeducation to help patients and their families understand how neurological changes can affect cognition, mood and behaviour, while guiding them towards meaningful strategies for coping. She also has a special interest in ADHD and enjoys supporting individuals managing this condition through both diagnostic assessments and psychotherapy.  

In addition to assessment, Carrie offers psychotherapy for a individuals facing a range of challenges, including neurological and medical conditions, cognitive impairment and ADHD. Her therapeutic work is grounded in psychodynamic theory, completed by her training in other modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Through psychotherapy, Carrie strives to create a supportive space in which individuals can explore their inner worlds, gain insight and enhance their emotional wellbeing. 

At the heart of Carrie’s work is a strong commitment to empathy, clarity, and collaboration. Whether through assessment or therapy, she works alongside patients to help them make sense of their experiences and find resilience and meaning in the face of change.
