Laura Hartman
Clinical Psychologist
Laura is a Clinical Psychologist originally from KwaZulu-Natal, who has called Cape Town home for many years. Whether running or hiking in nature, reading at home, or enjoying a board game with friends, she values balance, reflection and meaningful connection –qualities that shape her therapeutic work.
Laura’s professional journey reflects a longstanding interest in and respect for the relationship between physical and mental health. Before qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist, she worked in women’s health, early childhood development and disability advocacy research – interests that continue to inform and enrich her practice.
Laura has extensive experience working with adolescents and adults across diverse settings.
Her early work as a lay counsellor in a high school sparked a lasting passion for working with adolescents. This passion has grown through continued inpatient and outpatient work supporting young people and their families to navigate complex emotional, developmental and health challenges. In her work with adults, Laura has worked in acute psychiatric settings, including Valkenberg and Lentegeur Psychiatric hospitals, providing individual and group therapy, substance abuse support and comprehensive psychometric, diagnostic and neuropsychological assessments.
While working at Alexandra Hospital, she gained significant experience working with neurodiverse clients as well as clients with differing medical needs. This, in combination with extensive work with clients navigating identity exploration, systemic barriers and discrimination has deepened her commitment to providing care that is inclusive and affirming. Laura has additional interests in work with eating disorders, chronic pain and complex trauma, stemming from work in Groote Schuur Hospital’s specialist medical and psychiatric unit.
Laura completed her Masters in Psychology at the University of the Western Cape, where she was trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Since qualifying she has expanded her training to include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – a treatment approach she resonates with. Her work with diverse client populations has reinforced her belief that therapy is never a one-size-fits-all process.
She views each client as an expert in their own life and approaches therapy as a collaborative, tailored process. Grounded in empathy and acceptance, Laura aims to meet clients where they are and walk alongside them while they navigate growth and change at their own pace.
